Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County
of Matching Funds Remaining
Habitat provides housing solutions to hard-working, low-income families and individuals in need. We serve our local community by providing homeownership opportunities and critical home repair. “‘It's a hand up, not a handout,’” said Jay and his wife Elizabeth, who closed on their Habitat home in 2016. “That phrase, and the action and attitude of this organization changed my family's life forever.” People in our community partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Families in the Habitat program help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Our families also complete hundreds of hours of “sweat equity” that includes taking homeownership classes, working on Habitat build sites, and volunteering at our ReStores. With a hand up instead of a hand out, our families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build a better life. Habitat also provides critical home repairs for seniors (60+) through our "Aging in Place" program, and military veterans through our “Repair Corps” program.
The money we raise through Give Local St. Joseph County will be used to purchase building supplies so that 12 families can move into their new Habitat home by the end of the year. Your gift will help families like Drew and Ana. After meeting in school three years ago, they started dating and have been married since August 2016. They moved from Chicago to South Bend for job opportunities, but dealt with unsafe living conditions as they tried to establish their new life together. “A Habitat home means security, peace of mind, happiness, and independence,” said Drew and Ana. “There’s something special about walking into your own home and saying ‘this is mine, this is what I worked hard for.’” No donation is too small. Every nail, every stud, every bucket of paint that you help purchase will create a safe and affordable home for families in need.
Habitat's endowment with the Community Foundation will ensure that, year after year, we will continue to improve our programs and serve more families in need. We will strive toward our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
