La Casa de Amistad

La Casa de Amistad is a not-for-profit, charitable organization, which functions as a youth and community center on the West Side of South Bend. It was founded on October 1973 as a youth outreach program in response to the many needs facing Latino teenagers. Founded by Fr. John Phalen, C.S.C. and other community members, La Casa de Amistad offers various programs in an effort to assist Latino youth in self-acceptance and knowledge of the Latino culture of which they are a part. In 1975, La Casa officially incorporated and proposals were submitted petitioning additional funding for full-time personnel. In 1980, as a result of various grants and numerous private donors, La Casa de Amistad moved its operations from a home on South Warren Street to its current location at 746 South Meade Street. In 1985, La Casa became a United Way agency. Many local Hispanics and community leaders have either been the beneficiaries of La Casa’s services or have helped implement and guide programs. Since our founding in 1973, La Casa has modified its programming in order to address the changing needs of the Hispanic community. As a result, today La Casa not only provides programming for youth; it also offers social services and educational programs for adults, migrants, seasonal workers and local families.
Funds raised will assist our programs in youth, adult and family development. Our critical needs right now are for support in our immigration clinic. We provide high quality immigration legal services to low income clients, and for complex cases requiring services outside of our scope of practice, we refer to local immigration attorneys as needed. Client appointments for our immigration clinic have grown exponentially since November 2016. We had a record number of phone calls and appointments for our immigration services. In our citizenship class, we used to average about 50 students and have now more than doubled that and are at 137. We need assistance purchasing additional furniture, temporary staff support and other resources for these important community programs. Our mission has always been to empower our community, and through your support, we can continue our efforts.
In keeping with its original mission, La Casa continues to offer opportunities for the Latino youth and their families in order to help them succeed in society, while at the same time, maintaining a sense of cultural pride. La Casa is in the process of expanding its services to include a wider variety of activities that will continue to benefit both youth and adults.
