Established in 1974, Leadership South Bend/Mishawaka develops 21st century leaders using internationally acclaimed models including servant and authentic leadership. Each year, more than 120 adults, young professionals, and high school junior and seniors in St. Joseph County receive training in leadership skills and gain a new perspective on their community through in-depth examination facilitated by regional experts from both the public and private sectors.
The mission of Leadership is to develop the capacity and commitment of participants to recognize, understand and respond to the community's most pressing needs through civic education, skill building and service. Through its Signature Executive, Emerging, and Youth programs, Leadership South Bend/Mishawaka has cultivated and inspired more than 2,000 leaders to develop innovative community initiatives resulting in a legacy of incomparable vision, commitment and service.
Leadership South Bend/Mishawaka will use contributions made through the Give Local campaign to increase youth and adult scholarships. We are committed to providing high quality leadership training to a diverse group of participants representing all sectors of our community. Socio-economic challenges should not be a barrier to young people, nonprofits, and small businesses who cannot afford full tuition. With your help, Leadership South Bend/Mishawaka is better able to include individuals, especially youth, from diverse backgrounds in our dynamic programming.
If you ask a graduate of Leadership South Bend/Mishawaka what really "stuck" with them from the program, you're likely to hear a couple of words consistently: SERVICE and RELATIONSHIPS.
Through the Leadership experience, participants come to better understand their learning style as well as the learning styles of others. Participants practice how to relate to others with differing styles, maximizing the contributions of everyone on the team.
Graduates learn that leading is not about personal gain; leading is about fostering the success of others. Leaders serve members of their team, their community, and their family. Through the lens of servant leadership, participants see it's not about "me" - it's about "we". By investing in and strengthening relationships, Leadership graduates continue to nurture the friendships they develop through the program, benefitting alumni both personally and professionally long after graduating from the program.
