At The History Museum, visitors can tour the 38-room Oliver Mansion that was once home to the J.D. Oliver family. All furnishings are original, providing a wonderful glimpse of how the family lived. Visitors can stroll through two acres of gardens that surround the mansion and explore the Worker’s Home, a charming cottage reflecting life in the 1930s. The History Museum’s galleries offer compelling changing exhibits, including one that focuses on Notre Dame history, as well as a permanent exhibit that chronicles the area’s French exploration in the late 1600s, the pioneer settlement in the early 1800s, the Underground Railroad, the community’s industry, and much more. The History Museum is the national repository for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, whose story was immortalized in the film "A League of Their Own." An exhibit tells their amazing story. Children are thrilled with the Pioneer Village located in the museum’s Kidsfirst Children’s Museum.
The History Museum will use additional funds from this initiative to augment and enhance exhibits, programs, and services so that we continue to meet the highest quality standards for museums. Reflective of our accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums, we are committed to placing education at the center of everything we do. We are fortunate to have diverse resources and enjoy beneficial partnerships with other organizations. Yet, our program excellence depends on having a talented professional staff as well as maintaining and improving the facilities we need to support the myriad public programs and exhibits that we produce each year. Additional funds generated through Give Local St. Joseph County can and will make a significant difference in our operations on behalf of the public.
The History Museum is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, thanks in no small way to the generous support of an interested and engaged community. Thank you for helping us make history by serving St. Joseph County for another 150 years.
