Ray Bird Ministries
of Matching Funds Remaining
Camp Ray Bird (est 1919) is a Christian camp ministering to low-income children. Our outreach includes teaching campers the Good News about Jesus, interactions with positive role models, and a safe environment filled with fun and new experiences. Kids take away the biblical lessons they are taught, but just as much of what they learn is from what they experience through relationships and activities. Each summer, CRB hosts around 700 campers, mostly from St. Joseph County. Campers are immersed for 5 nights/6 days in the rustic, natural environment and experience wholesome activities such as swimming, water sliding, canoeing, fishing, go carting, archery, camper fires, and team building initiatives. These active times help the children to get their wiggles out and provide opportunities to build relationship with their counselors and cabin mates. The camp counselors also teach bible lessons and help the children to learn their memory verses to earn a camp T-shirt. Our sliding fee scale brings the registration cost down for low-income families. The families that we reach out to often pay as little as $30 for the week. In addition to reaching out to low-income families, we also host a racially diverse population. Last summer our campers were 39% black, 35% white, 14% bi-racial, 12% Hispanic, and less than 1% other (Asian and American Indian). Camp Ray Bird’s racial demographics provide many teachable moments and allow for greater mutual understanding and reconciliation of races.
Our waterfront! Waterfront activities are camper-favorites! We have a big goal—to raise $22,000 to replace and improve some of our key equipment—this means canoes, boat motors, docks and more. Our current equipment is safe, but is reaching the end of its life. Improvements to this centerpiece of camp will be incredible for our campers’ experience and will help us in terms of maintenance, too. Any funds that go above and beyond our goal will be put to use in the same spirit of improving our most cherished camper activities.
Thank you, generous donors and friends of Camp Ray Bird! Your gifts bless our campers and serve as reminders to us of God’s faithfulness and provision. There are some amazing resources and organizations in St. Joseph County, and we’re glad to be among them. Camp Ray Bird has an incredible history surrounding it and a rich tradition of making a wholesome camping experience accessible to underprivileged children in our community. As we look forward to this year and a little further out to our 100 year anniversary in 2019, our staff and board have been forming some strategic goals. The camp has seen wonderful progress over the years, and we’d do well to keep things moving and improving. While our mission remains the same, our staff and board are finding that some of the key ways we want to grow and improve are in the areas of facilities, staff development, follow up with campers, and community engagement. We’ll look forward to sharing with you about some of these developments through our newsletter, on Facebook, or at one of our events at camp.
