Southold Dance Theater is a nonprofit arts organization based in the discipline of classical ballet. Southold Dance Theater has an extensive class schedule for ages 3 and up. Classes are also offered in other mediums of dance, such as modern, tap and hip-hop. Southold is the only school in the area to offer drop in classes in Adult Ballet and Adult Modern. We offer a summer schedule of classes, workshop intensives and a week long Arts and a week long Ballet camp for our younger dancers. In addition to our pre-professional classical ballet program, we offer recreational dance classes for our young dancers. Classes are also held off-site at the Stanley Clark School for our youngest dancers. Southold serves the community by providing a variety of programs including the annual production of the Nutcracker at The Morris Performing Arts Center (which includes shows for schools and groups in the community at a reduced ticket price), a yearly full length ballet in the Spring at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center, in-school presentations and many community outreach performances.
Southold Dance Theater will use the money raised toward production costs, which includes sets, props and costume design and construction. It will also be used toward our extensive scholarship and financial aid programs. Southold's dance education program is committed to keeping artistic training accessible to students regardless of income and providing local performance opportunities. The money will also be used to expand our class and performance schedule. In the upcoming season, it is a goal to include sensory-friendly performances and classes to Southold Dance Theater.
Each season, Southold Dance Theater plays a vital role in Michiana's vibrant arts community. Our dance education program is committed to keeping excellent artistic training accessible to all students regardless of income and providing local performance opportunities alongside nationally acclaimed guest artists and choreographers. Other goals include increasing awareness of the arts, attracting new audiences to dance, and helping complement arts education in our community schools through our Nutcracker outreach performances and school shows, which are performed at no cost or a reduced ticket rate. Southold seeks to engage with the community through outreach performances, which include ArtBeat, Arts Everywhere, nursing homes, libraries, the Boys&Girls Club and others. All of these performances benefit Southold Dance Theater in several ways. The most important is the exposure that our dancers get to the broad demographics and make-up of our surrounding community, as well as it gives our community exposure to the art of dance and live performance. The benefit to both sides cannot be measured. The community becomes more knowledgeable and educated regarding the arts. Statistics show that the younger that children are exposed to the arts, the more likely they are to continue to be life-long patron of the arts.
