St. Joseph County Parks cares for over 1,300 acres of habitat and provides educational and recreational opportunities that connect people to our natural resources. With an annual visitation of over 320,000, families, school children and outdoor enthusiasts participate in interpretive programs, hiking, canoeing/kayaking, snow tubing and cross country skiing and more at Bendix Woods, St. Patrick's and Ferrettie-Baugo Creek County Parks, Crone Restoration Area and Spicer Lake Nature Preserve.
The St. Joseph County Parks Fund enhances our efforts to provide outdoor experiences for children by providing funds to schools for bus transportation, program fees, and other program support. Interpretive programs such as Pond Scooping, Habitat Studies and Maple Syruping share the wonder of nature with children. During Paddles from the Past and Pioneer Skills, children experience paddling a 34-ft. replica voyageur canoe and learn the art of spinning and weaving. The Fund also provides support for under-served children to experience outdoor adventures such as canoeing or fishing, helping to foster a life-long appreciation for the natural world..
Bike Michiana Coalition has issued a $15,000 challenge match and a portion of the monies raised for the St. Joseph County Parks Fund will help complete Phase 2 (Darden Rd to Auten Rd) of the LaSalle Trail, a paved 10-ft wide bike-pedestrian path from Roseland to the Michigan state line. As part of the Indiana-Michigan River Valley Trail, this inter-state pathway includes HAWK crossings at key road intersections and will link to trails in Michigan and South Bend. Help us earn the BMC challenge money with your contribution!
