Frequently Asked Questions: For Donors

What is Give Local St. Joseph County?

In celebration of our 25th Anniversary, the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County will host Give Local St. Joseph County, a 24-hour giving day event on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Designed to support our county's best charities now and from now on, Give Local St. Joseph County will inspire people to give generously to their favorite nonprofit organizations whose important work they want to support.

It's our day to make a big impact! Every dollar donated on May 9 will be increased by a share $2.4 million dollars in matching funds provided by our generous Give Local St. Joseph County sponsors.

How will Give Local St. Joseph County help my favorite charity now and from now on?

Because the Community Foundation's primary mission is to build permanent resources for our community, Give Local St. Joseph County is designed to support local nonprofits both now and from now on. How? By passing through 75% of net dollars raised for each participating charity to support current programming, and by placing the other 25%—plus generous matching funds—into each charity's permanent endowment, increasing the annual support that charity receives year after year.

What is the Community Endowment Fund?

One way the Community Foundation supports local charities is through our Community Endowment Fund, an unrestricted endowment that makes grants to local charities through a competitive application process. Local charities can request grants to help them expand programs, improve facilities, and build capacity to better meet the needs of their clients. The Community Endowment Fund gives us flexible resources to support major new initiatives that address ever-changing community needs and opportunities. This is a good option for donors who want to participate in Give Local St. Joseph County without having to select specific charities.

How can I make a donation?

1) By check, made payable to Community Foundation of St. Joseph County

You can benefit multiple charities with a single check. Just be sure to list the charities and the amounts you want each to receive (with a minumum gift of $25 each). Please mail your check early to ensure receipt by May 9, 2017. Checks may be mailed to the Community Foundation (P.O. Box 837, South Bend, IN, 46624) and must be received no later than May 9, 2017. Hand-delivered checks must be dropped off by 6 p.m. on May 9 at our office (205 W. Jefferson, Suite 610, South Bend).

Gifts received with no charitable designations will be placed in the Community Endowment Fund. Checks received after May 9 will be placed in the designated charities’ endowments and will not count toward Give Local St. Joseph County matching funds.

2) By credit card, online

Online gifts may be made at GiveLocalSJC.org on May 9, 2017, starting at 12:01 a.m. and for the next 24 hours, using your credit or debit card.

NEW THIS YEAR: You can schedule your online gift at GiveLocalSJC.org in advance, any time after our preview period begins on May 1, 2017.

You can search the list of participating charities by name or by category. Participating nonprofits will each have a donation page where you can enter the amount you want to donate. Donations begin at $25 and there's no limit to the maximum size or number of donations you may make. Give to as many different participating nonprofits as you like. Visit the Leaderboard page for a list of participating nonprofits and click on the organization's name to visit its profile page. On May 9, you'll be able to see all the gifts being made to Give Local St. Joseph County—in real time.

3) Through a gift of appreciated stock

Contact Rose Meissner at the Community Foundation (574-232-0041) for instructions on how to transfer gifts of stock. Transfers of stocks or mutual funds usually take a few days, so plan to initiate the transfer when our preview period begins on May 1. Please confirm the date, type, and number of shares transferred and the charities you wish to benefit.

4) Through an IRA gift

Donors over age 70½ can transfer IRA assets directly from their IRA plans to the Community Foundation (up to $100,000).  Such transfers count toward the donor’s required minimum distribution. They will not be included in the donor’s income.  Because IRA contributions were never taxed in the first place, they do not qualify for a charitable deduction. Contact your IRA plan administrator to initiate a transfer. Contact the Community Foundation with instructions about how you want the gift allocated to your favorite charities.

5) Through a donor-advised fund grant

You may use distributable amounts from your donor-advised fund at the Community Foundation to make grants to favorite charities on May 9, the day of Give Local St. Joseph County. You may initiate these grants at any time during our preview period beginning May 1 through May 9, using the donor portal on the Community Foundation’s website or by contacting Kayla Myers (574-232-0041).

PREVIEW PERIOD: Because some gifts (such as stock transfers and IRA rollovers) take longer to complete, the arrival of mail can be uncertain, and donors may be traveling on May 9, we will have a "preview period" beginning Monday, May 1, 2017. Use the preview period (running May 1 through event on May 9) to:

  • schedule your credit card gift in advance through this website
  • initiate gifts of stock (act early to ensure arrival by May 9)
  • initiate a gift from your IRA (must by 70½ ; contact your plan administrator)
  • recommend a grant from your Community Foundation donor-advised fund
  • mail or drop off a check to the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County dated May 9, 2017

If you need assistance with any of these options, please contact the Community Foundation at (574) 232-0041.

What is a Community Foundation?

Community foundations are tax-exempt public charities with a common goal: improving the quality of life in the geographic areas they serve. Community foundations are funded by individuals, families, corporations, and nonprofit organizations that create permanent charitable funds to help meet critical needs within a given region. Overseen by a volunteer board of leading citizens, community foundations invest and administer these funds. There are now more than 700 community foundations in the United States.

What is an endowment?

Gifts to endowment are permanently invested to generate earnings. Each year, the Community Foundation pays out a portion of the earnings as grants to local charities. A portion is reinvested so the endowment grows over time. Endowments provide an important source of income to charities that they can depend on, in good times and in bad. Dozens of local charities have endowed funds at the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County. Give Local St. Joseph County is specifically designed to increase the size of these endowed funds so they provide a growing source of support to charities year after year.
