Major Sponsor: The Judd Leighton Foundation
In honor of the Community Foundation's 25th Anniversary, the Judd Leighton Foundation provided a $1 million challenge grant to launch Give Local St. Joseph County 2017. This very generous lead gift allowed the Community Foundation to work with a small number of major sponsors to build a total matching pool of $2.4 million for the nonprofit organizations participating in Give Local St. Joseph County.
Philanthropist and businessman Judd Leighton was one of the Community Foundation's most committed supporters. A founding Community Foundation Board member, he created the Leighton Endowment for the Advancement of Philanthropy in 1997. The Leighton Endowment makes it possible for the Community Foundation to waive administrative fees on most endowed funds, ensuring that the resources held in those funds can fully support the causes that the donors intended. In 1999, he and his wife Mary Lou endowed the Community Foundation's Leighton Award for Nonprofit Excellence, which is the largest award program of its kind. Every other year, this $150,000 endowment challenge grant, which also includes a $25,000 cash prize, is awarded competitively to a St. Joseph County nonprofit organization that demonstrates superior leadership, management, and programming. You can see the list of past Leighton Award winners on the Community Foundation's website. Also, in 2004, Judd Leighton helped create the Community Foundation's ArtsEverywhere Fund with a $3 million challenge gift.
Judd Leighton passed away in 2005, and he's deeply missed. His impact on our community—particularly on our local nonprofits—is beyond measure. You can read more about his life on the Judd Leighton Foundation's website.

The Community Foundation of St. Joseph County
As one of the largest community foundations in Indiana, we've been connecting people who care with causes that matter for 25 years.
The Community Foundation of St. Joseph County is a charitable endowment that improves the quality of life for the citizens of St. Joseph County and their succeeding generations. We're working hard to build permanent resources that will support our community now and always. Thanks to the generosity of local citizens, we are able to give away nearly $6 million each year to support local charities and help students attend college.
How? We receive gifts from people who care about the St. Joseph County community, we invest these gifts forever, and we use the investment earnings to make grants each year to local charities and to undertake key initiatives aimed at making our community stronger and better. Our key initiatives include the African American Community Fund, ArtsEverywhere, Early Years Count Education Initiative, South Bend Group Violence Intervention, and efforts to support independent living for local seniors and improve nursing home quality.
We support many of our community's best nonprofits in two key ways: First, we award money to nonprofits through competitive grant processes. These short-term grants pay for things such as staff training, program expansion, new technology, and building improvements. We also provide permanent annual support to scores of our community’s best charities through endowed funds. These funds are permanently invested and provide a reliable source of support to charities in good times and in bad. A key goal of Give Local St. Joseph County is to grow these endowed funds.
Hundreds of additional funds have been established within the Community Foundation by your friends, your neighbors, and others who care about our county's future. Individuals and families set up funds to benefit specific charities or to serve a field of charitable interest, such as the arts, educational scholarships, youth, or the environment. Many local corporations have set up funds as part of their strategy to support the local community.
